Steens Mountain is a 30 mile long fault scarp that forms an alpine island above the high desert of southeastern Oregon. Other than high elevation aspen groves and juniper on the lower slopes, the mountain lacks forest cover, and hikers can travel almost anywhere. Most of the summit ridge is BLM land, but there are areas in private ownership, especially in Kiger Gorge. The mountain's spectacular glacial gorges contain beautiful trout streams that are fed by snowbanks which often last through the summer.

Stretching from the base of Steens Mountain to the north shore of the Malheur and Harney Lakes complex, the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is one of the crown jewels of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service's refuge system.
Habitats included within this refuge include the alkali waters of Harney Lake, the fresh water of Malheur Lake, vast marshes, willow thickets, stands of large cottonwoods, and plenty of sage steppe.

The Kiger Mustangs are thought to be one of the most pure herds of Spanish Mustangs existing in the wild today. When thinking about Kiger Mustangs, you should distinguish them from most other wild horses. Most wild horses are of mixed breeding while the Kiger Mustangs possess all of the characteristics of the Spanish Barb from which the Spanish Mustang came and by today's standards the Kiger Mustang appears to be a pure breed.

Diamond Craters was recently established as Diamond Craters Outstanding Natural Area due to its unique volcanic landscape, as well as botanical and faunal diversity. It was named in 1874 after local rancher Mace McCoy's Diamond brand. The volcanic terrain covers an area of 23 square miles (about 60 square km) and represents one of the most recent volcanic centers in Oregon, next to the Cascade Volcanoes. This Quaternary-age basaltic volcanic complex is also one of the most diverse in North America, including aa and pahoehoe flows, cinder cones, spatter cones and spires, domes, and lava lakes. The craters formed sometime during the last 25,000 years as molten basalt rose through fissures and flooded the surface, which was then largely dry lake beds. Before the initial erupted material completely cooled, additional basaltic magma rose, arching the surface upward and creating 6 structural domes.
